Blog Entry: 3/25/2006 1:45:17 PM
I am brought to a logon page in which I cannot access the page. This must be due to the check_user_inc.asp include. Without the include I get a blank page.,
When viewing a list of albums with the navigation option 1, is there a way to get the Time Created sort to list Newest to Oldest, instead of Oldest to Newest.
Looking at the code in albums_navigation1_inc.asp, I can not determine how this works.
Thanks for your help!
p.s. I always forget how addicting this stuff can be...lol.
Now that I think about you may very well be able to use the existing login_form_inc.asp page,
the header and footer files for the users area may be ok as well.
probably the smart thing to do is try your old ones and compare them to the new and see if everything you need is there. If not add it by looking at the source html and comparing.
All other files should definetly be replaced with the new.
ok.. Chris.. I am now kicking myself in the butt. In the setting section, I had to redirect certain urls and directories to the right spot. I forgot that I renamed the root folder.
Thank you, thus far for your continued help. It is greatly appreciate.
Thank you for the response to my question. In the mean time if I can figure any workaround I will post it here.,
ASPBanner.NET was discontinued about 14 months ago. It is no longer supported in any way because quite frankly the classic ASP version is faster, more stable, has more features, and is a lot easier to install and get running., check the connection string in the dataconn_inc.asp file. If using MSAccess it will show the location. If using SQL Server it will show the SQL Server details in which case there is no physical database file., at some point I can do the users in mass correct using the import feature in aspprotect right?,
If you PM me via the forum you are welcome to a copy of the current ASP Unlimited Version. It can serve banners to any type of page extension. All you have to do is ask for a copy.
Whether or not your existing ASPBanner.NET database is exactly the same structure I do not know, but I believe it is. You should compare the two if you plan to keep using the old database and make any neccessary changes so the old database has the exact same structure as the new version. If there are any differences they are very few.
It happens at least once per hour or every time a banner is edited in the system by the admin.cwilliams38441.6427083333,
Changing its frequency would be somewhat complicated. You'll have to make changes to the code in a few places and you will effect performance adversely by doing it more often as it will mean a lot more database queries which defeats the purpose of doing it once per hour to conserve resources. The reason is when you change the frequency of that you also change the frequency of the entire banner application variable caching system. It difficult to explain but it unlike most banner systems out there it basically fetches banner rotation info every so often instead of every single time your page needs a banner. It stores this rotation and cycling information in ultra fast application variables. The docs actually go over a little bit of how that process actually functions under "using the system / Setting Up Banners
Its a customization I just can not support and I do not recommend doing, but if you really want to you should look at the "aspbanner_inc.asp" file
this is the part that makes it happen at least once per hour (requires visitors to your site to happen obviously)... you'd have to cleverly recode it to work slightly more often
' Checks the time the banner data was last updated and basically updates it if an hour or more has passed
If Cint(Application("BannersLastUpdated")) <> Cint(Hour(time)) Then
There may be more to changing this than that, but this is all I can tell you.
ok.. the count your talking about wont increment until someone other than you views the page.
After that you can increment it one time...
It keeps track of the last IP that hit it.. if it is the same it doesn't increment
This is all by design... so the same person doesn't increment the count over and over..
It's simplitist and it can be tricked... but it does what it needs to do
(User Search & Contact Mod) for ASPProtect Version 7.x
This will allow an individual user to search for other users as well as email or call them.
Notes: This is a down and dirty mod. The users page from the admin area was used as a starting point. I then edited it up real quick to be used as a user search. The way it is it shows the user email as a regular email link. If you want to set it up so emailing is done from the application and emails are not actually shown you will have to do some extra work. If you don't want phone numbers shown you will have to remove that column which is not very difficult.
Back up your existing ASPProtect installation.
copy "search.asp" into your "users" folder
Direct your users there. They will have to be logged in to view the page.,
WARNING: This has not been extensively tested for SQL Injection attacks.
I think it is perfectly fine the way it is by looking it over quickly, but use it at your own risk.
, you can edit the look of it but because it is licensed software the links to aspbanner and the aspbanner logo.. etc etc must remain otherwise change it all you like., Haven't gotten to it yet. I do know there are a few customers using it to edit the app and said it was not all that different. Maybe they will chime in with some tips.,
Picture upload feature settings.
||< = value=True name=Use_Picture_Upload> Check this if you will be using the picture uploading feature.|
||< size=60 value=C:\Inetpub\virtuals\aspphotogallery.com\Web\demo\pictu res name=UploadDirectory>|
Ask your server admin if you are not sure.
This directory needs proper permissions for the SAFILEUP component or the VBSCRIPT solution to work correctly. It basically needs to same permissions as the database directory would need when using Microsoft Access.
||< size=60 value=http://www.aspphotogallery.com/demo/pictures name=PictureURL>|
This is the web URL of the the upload directory specified above.
||< = value=SAUP name=Upload_Solution>|
This option will enable file uploads using a component called SAFILEUP which is high end upload component available from www.softartisans.com. It is far superior in performance and reliability compared to the VBSCRIPT file upload solution.It is highly recommended for a busy site. If you enable this component and do not have it installed on your web server you will cause an error.
||< = value=ASPUPLOAD name=Upload_Solution>|
This option will enable file uploads using a component called ASPUPLOAD which is high end upload component available from www.persits.com. It is also far superior in performance and reliability compared to the VBSCRIPT file upload solution.It is highly recommended for a busy site. If you enable this component and do not have it installed on your web server you will cause an error.
||< = value=DUNDAS name=Upload_Solution>|
This option will enable file uploads using a (FREE) component called DUNDAS UPLOAD which is a high end upload component available from www.dundas.com. It is also far superior in performance and reliability compared to the VBSCRIPT file upload solution.It is highly recommended for a busy site. If you enable this component and do not have it installed on your web server you will cause an error.
||< = value= name=Upload_Solution>|
This option will enable file uploads using a pure VBSCRIPT solution. It requires VBSCRIPT version 5 or higher to be installed on the server. The solution usually works fine, but has been reported to cause memory leaks on XP machines.
Thanks! Will try both.
Appreciate the support.,
The hosting company has been doing some work apparently regarding the database connection issue. Still something is funky
When I type in www.vickerylightning.com/aspgallery/default.asp I get the custom 404 error page and I noticed that it is trying to open the following:
Is that what it is supposed to do?
Rhona, the rookie
We have been using ASP Protect for a while now and are big fans of the program. We received ASP Banner 8.2 with our puchase which we now have a need for. I went to put the files on our webpage, and doing nothing else other than locating the directory there, I noticed differences with how ASP Protect operates. We have customized it a bit and want to keep the 2 programs separate. the login screen for one showed up on the other, and some ASP Protect pages appeared altered so i immediately deleted ASP Banner. did I do something wrong, and how can i ensure the 2 programs work completely independant of each other? We can't risk braking what we're now using but would really like to add banner functionality to some of our pages. maybe an update to the program before we install? puchase new software? Thanks for your help-,
I apologize if I've missed this, but I would love to see the ability to auto-e-mail the advertiser at some randomly set interval before the banner expires. Ideally, I would also be cc'd on this e-mail so I can stay in touch. If the advertiser wants to renew, I can receive payment and change the expiration date without their banner ever falling out of service.
Since e-mail is already built into the program, would it be difficult to add a routine that checks for expiring banners at some daily interval, and contacts the advertiser?
To get really fancy, the e-mail could include the ability for me to add a button for paypal, allowing the advertiser to easily click and send off another payment.
If you re-start the web via IIS, reboot the server, or (possibly) just add and remove a category... that will clear up.
ASPClassifieds and ASPListings must be installed in seperate IIS applications if they are the same web. Otherwise the category caching system of each system will interfere with each other. They were never intended to be installed in the same web together since ASPListings is merely a stripped down version of ASPClassifieds and they share a lot of the same code. Like I said though if different IIS applications are set up in the web site you can do it because each IIS application will have it's own set of application and session variables.,
You have mentioned in the past that several other methods might be a better option for asp pages.
Examples would be: XML Parser Method or asphttp method.
Or, is it possible to use the asphttp method on all pages, whether they are asp or not?
I'm just trying to figure out what is the most efficient way to use the banner system.
Any helpful feedback would be appreciated!
Ok new puzzle. I have now managed to gonfigure it to get the admin screen and update members. All excellent news. Seems to work a treat.
But have used the code you give in your getting started guide to add at
the very top of an aspx page to be protected. The path is configured
correctly I am sure. the aspx file is in the root, the protect program
is in a folder now configured as an application (hence the steps
forward to get to the admin screens) on the root, so address should be
Proble when I load that aspx page is as above. The exact same config error,oww!
I am sure its a setting on my server now, but I dont know what to ask for, Any ideas...
So close now!
The random password is generated during signup and the function that creates it is located on this page of code.
it looks like this
Function RndStr(Length, UseChrs)
If IsNull(UseChrs) OR (UseChrs = "") Then UseChrs = "0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz!@#$%^&*()_+=-"
NewStr = ""
For gpIndex = 1 To Length
NewStr = NewStr & Mid(UseChrs, Int((Len(UseChrs)) * Rnd + 1), 1)
RndStr = NewStr
For example go to this page and hit refresh and watch the password change.
Yes, sometimes if you hit refresh quickly over and over you'll get the same password, but not generally. Also that is not something that would happen normally as a user isnt going to sit at that screen and hit refresh over and over.
Anyway... when signing up the new user of course has the option to change that password to something they would like better...
As far as... "selecting the same user name and password every time"
I need more information. That does not make sense for a lot of reasons.
Most importantly because usernames are not generated. The are inputed by the user during signup. They are then checked to ensure they do not already exist before the user is allowed to complete their signup.
So under normal circumstances there can never be duplicate usernames in the system or even users with duplicate emails as that is checked as well.
Now of course if you edited the code in any way it is possible all this is not working correctly ?
(( TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK !!))
This is an Expirmental MOD for ASPBanner Version 7.3 Only
Do not use it on other versions....
It encodes CODE Banner information before saving it into the application variables that handle banner rotation. It then decodes that information before displaying them on your web pages.
Unless your having a problem don't use this mod. It is not officially supported in any way.
-- DIRECTIONS --
( COPY THESE FILES INTO YOUR ASPBANNER DIRECTORY AND BACK UP ALL THE FILES THAT YOU WILL BE REPLACING ))
(( SO YOU CAN REVERT BACK IF THERE IS TROUBLE ))
If you are wondering if the "appinfo_inc.asp" included has the weight banner bug fix applied to it already. That is a bug mentioned in our forums
(( YOU CAN NOT USE THE INCLUDE METHODS OF CALLING BANNERS WITH THIS CODE ))
(( USE ONE OF THE OTHER METHODS ))
also.. every once in a while I get some nervous person concerned about security... and the pros and cons of having parent paths enabled.
etc etc etc
so let me add this bit of info..
I donít know what your hosting company will say because it is an iffy topic and those that understand it have a hard time explaining it to someone who doesn't. Also usually the hosting company doesn't have a clue except they heard it was a security risk.
Here is the low down from someone that really understands it...
(well, at least I think I do)
The only real security risks are from YOU and possibly other people hosting on the same server if they have parent paths enabled that is.
Meaning your site visitors can't possibly do anything with it unless of course you let them upload and run their own asp files to the server.
Anyway.. if YOU run malicious asp scripts you could potentially attack other sites on the server and look at things you shouldn't. As could other sites on the same server do to you I suppose.
So, unless you plan on doing that or some other site admin on the server does it to you its not really a concern. Just an advantage in coding abilities.
If you attack someone elses site on the server or lurk where you shouldnt then you are probably violating your hosting agreement.
99% of the time everyone gets all nervous over nothing.. half the people nervous about this have sites nobody would ever want to hack anyway.
Many people with a really important/busy sites are going to have a dedicated server somewhere so the setting is not relevant..
The hosting companies of course have to warn you.
This setting was enabled by default for years on IIS4-IIS5. I never once heard one single real story about anyone attacking anything because of this setting. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen but I am just telling you what I know.
This is all my opinion so take it for what it is...
If you are a Hosting Company your better off turning it on at the customers request, giving them a warning about it, and in turn having happy customers.
The big hosting companies like Alentus and MaximumASP do it...
There are far worse things than this to let people do after all.
Beleive it or not I have actually been in servers where they gave the anonymous webserver acount modify permissions EVERYWHERE yet they disabled parent paths ????
All this being said installing the desktop version of SQL may be a little tricky as it may complain that your SA account needs a strict password.
The solution is to run the SQL Desktop setup.exe with some parameters specifying a password for the SA account.
So you go to the command prompt or make a shortcut to the setup file and run something like this
Hello- I am trying to install the ASPPROTECT product and tried to read all the docs but still am getting the following error:
I understand about the physical path for the DSN-less connection and followed the example given. I got in touch with tech support for the host of my site and the give me the following as a physical path:
I was thinking it worked like this; A user goes to that page and logs in.. and from there they can then browse the site and do what they want..
So in order for it to work i need to edit a page say... members.aspx (i assume it needs to be an asp.net page) and in the header put that protect code and when a user accesses it, it will prompt them for their un and pw and then if correct will allow them to view the page... and likewise if they are still logged in will be able to use the page?
If that is how to works as i mentioned above thats great...
I understand the redirect principle...but say i have a log in box on the main page... you know like most pages have a user log in on the left hand side... i wanted to do that. But i cant obviously protect the main home page or else normal users will not be able to view it without logging in or registering,
Hi, I have not gotten anything from you about it.
click on the PM button below and send it that way through the forums.
